Utilizing our oilfield and industrial waste water experience, CETCO Energy Services now offers slurry solutions for all concrete gray water producers.
Muddog SlurrySep™ has been specially developed to accelerate settling of the cement fines to provide clean, pH adjusted process water for recycling.
Muddog SlurryDry™ is formulated to quickly absorb free water in cement sludge to allow compliant, non-leaching disposal.
CETCO Energy Services has been a leader in water treatment for more than 30 years, solving some of the industry’s toughest handling problems. Our experience and technologies have allowed users to overcome challenges in concrete slurry applications. CETCO’s efforts have led to creative ways to treat and dispose of slurry and residual solids from Ready Mix batch operations.
Concrete has many construction applications, including roads, airport runways, foundations, multilevel structures and residential uses, to name a few. It requires water to mix with its ingredients – cement, sand, aggregate, and water – and is generally transported by Ready Mix trucks to the worksite. According to the National Ready Mix Concrete Association (NRMCA), there are more than 65,000 of these trucks in use currently in the United States.
Once the concrete has been poured at the construction site, the trucks return to the plant to wash out the chutes and insides of the trucks’ drums. The NRMCA estimates that high volumes of water, more than 200 gallons, are consumed with each truck washing. The wastewater from the washing procedure needs treatment prior to disposal or reuse, in order to comply with increasingly stringent local, state and federal environmental regulations under the Clean Water Act, including the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) and storm water permits.
After truck washing, the wastewater is sent to a series of settling pits for removal of fines and aggregates in a closed-loop for non-potable water recycling. As the water overflows from the first to subsequent pits, it becomes increasingly clearer. The fines accumulate in the first tank until a point at which the pit needs to be pumped of most of its water and a front-end loader removes the settled accumulation for eventual disposal or recycling. This procedure can add surface water pollution and be difficult to handle because of the semi-wet solids.
Colored concrete is becoming increasingly popular with homeowners but presents additional problems for wastewater treatment. It can contaminate the truck drums and settling pits, adding time to the cleaning process and often adding several passes through the pits or, if not eliminated, could even require the addition of fresh water for cleaning, an increased maintenance cost or additional process water. The extra time and additional water costs for truck drum cleaning with color can easily exceed the premium charged for color washout.
CETCO solves concrete wastewater problems with two proprietary, field-proven products – Muddog SlurrySep™ and Muddog SlurryDry™. Each provides a cost-effective and efficient solution for Ready Mix waste liquids and solids.
SlurrySep™, a granular bentonite/polymer blend, removes high levels of suspended solids in concrete wastewater. By separating heavy fines earlier in the process, the unique product provides a means of speeding up wastewater settling, reducing pit maintenance to one pit and allowing plant operators to turn around their trucks more quickly.
SlurrySep™ reduces maintenance. With cleaner recycled water, pumps and truck cleaning apparatus do not scale and perform more efficiently.
A special attribute of SlurrySep™ is its ability to coagulate and separate color pigments, almost immediately in the initial pit. The color particles sink to the bottom of the pit with the solids while the clear water remains on the top and flows to the next pit. Producers save money on cleanup labor, reduce any contamination of recycled water needed for truck clean out, and keep color from remaining in the system to ruin future mixes.
SlurryDry™ is used in tandem with SlurrySep™ to aid in solidification of the waste slurry. The stabilizer prepares the concrete residue from the first pit for easier handling and disposal. It further assists in the cleanup of color pigmented fines.
CETCO water and wastewater treatments continue to prove their worth in increasing a concrete producer’s bottom line. With water sources becoming a scarcer commodity, the combination of SlurrySep™ and SlurryDry™ provides the answer for keeping environmentally safe water on the property for multiple truck-washing recycles.
